Didn't mean to imply that you should only blog about serious stuff. But, I mean, admitting to watching to Eurovision is a bit like admitting to being a Trekkie... oh wait... ;)

Sorry John... just got frustrated at the increasing laughability at the so called democratic voting system. Maybe if the UK withdrew funding for it, as well as not participating it may make some impact.
I guess that I am an advocate for fairness, and when I see rampant cheating (whihc this kind of voting really is) then I get annoyed.
I would normally blog about more serious stuff... it just got under the radar!!

I'm really not sure how to respond to this post.
That you watched it is bad enough.
That you blogged about it compounds the problem.
(That I responded to your blog says something that I don't want to even think about ;) ).
I've long since given up watching, or even being interested in, Eurovision, even for its kitsch value. I suspect the Father Ted version has more than a grain of truth in it. Mind you, it's a sad reflection on society when politics/alliances find their way into something as 'simple' as a singing competition. Or am I being naive?

Thanks for your comment. I agree about your picture of the church. Oil tankers come to mind where I am, and they take ages to slow down and turn, and the church can be a bit like that.
The vast majority of the comments from the floor were well thought out and helpful and we should indeed be proud of the Kirk.
Glad that you too feel more positive and hopeful.

I too caught some of the sessions on the web - very good quality this year (and that includes the debates)! I'm left with the impression that the Church is beginning to move - a bit like trying to turn a huge cargo ship - and we're getting into position for a more mission focussed kirk and not one of maintenance. Or perhaps I'm imagining it all after the excitement of the National Gathering!

I was mightily impressed by the quality of the Conveners - they all seem to have mastered their briefs exceptionally well and have deatailed knowledge of the most arcane parts of their reports. The contributions from the floor were also of a very high standard, with many, many moving stories and personal experience. We should be proud of our Kirk, despite the flaws.

Certainly I feel more hopeful and positive after this Assembly.

Thanks John.
It will probably take a couple of years for the real impact of decisions made at this Assembly to percolate down (or should that be up) to congregations. (should be filter, I think...better coffee).
I had to behave myself when sitting begind the convener. Morag had an encyclopaedic understanding of her committee. The old Church and Nation plus Education plus a couple of other old committees were added together in the reordering of 121.
The Trustees are bound by law to do what they are doing, but I couldn't help thinking that they could still be legal and fulfil the wishes of congregations by thinking a bit more compassionately and creatively. Money isn't always the bottom line.

I dipped in and out of the live video feed when I had a chance and didn't think it dull (well, not always). I did spot you on camera. You were just over the shoulder of Morag Mylne during the Church and Society report.
I caught most of the Chaplains' report as well and was also deeply moved by the address from Angus McLeod. It puts chaplaincy in rather a different light when compared to my hospital chaplaincy placement.
I did get the general impression that there was a growing groundswell of change beginning. Some of the comments in the General Trustees debate showed that some people were wanting to be rather more flexible with their resources and that there wasn't the desire to throw money at buildings that were not meeting the need of a community.
It'll be interesting to see how far that filters down.

Public interest is quite high. Perhaps a surprise there, but we have to bear in mind that in spite of the falling numbers, the Kirk can boast a greater membership than all those who visit football stadia and political parties put together !

I've been dipping in to the live webcasts, when I get a chance, just to get a flavour of this year's GA. Monday's Ministries Council report looks interesting and I might try and pop through for it. Not sure if the public gallery will be busy or not though (maybe I'm too optimistic about the interest level in GA).
